Ayurveda: Ancient Science, Timeless Wisdom
Ayurveda is an ancient science and a timeless wisdom, recognised as a valuable healing system that addresses all facets of life - mind, body and spirit. Unlike many modern approaches to health, Ayurveda does not seperate our inner world from our outer world. It teaches us that everything which exists in the macrocosm of the universe also exists in the microcosm of the human being. We are not seperate from nature, we are a reflection of it.
What Does Ayurveda Mean?
The word Ayurveda is derived from two Sanskrit words - Ayu, meaning life, and Veda, meaning knowledge. Together, they form "the knowledge of life", a philosophy passed down to us by the great seers of India through the sacred texts known as the Vedas.
These teachings show us how to live in harmony with the laws of nature, so that we may achieve and maintain a state of perfect health. The laws of nature are eternally true, Ayurveda's teachings allign us to her laws remaining unchanged across thousands of years. This is not a quick fix or a passing wellness trend, it is a complete way of life, designed to enhance long-term wellbeing rather than mask a long-term problem.
A Philosophy That Embraces the Whole Person
Ayurveda embraces the whole person, mind, body and soul. It defines life as the intelligent coordination of four elements:
- Atma - the soul
- Mamas - the mind
- Indriyas - the senses
- Sharira - the body
Together, these four contribute to the wholeness of life and shape the quality of every experience we have. When these are in balance, we thrive. When they fall out of alignment, we suffer. Ayurveda offers us the wisdom to notice, understand and restore that balance.
